GREENHERITAGE – Nurturing a sustainable future in the gardens of time

The GreenHeritage project aims to integrate cultural heritage, specifically at archaeological parks, with teaching young generations about sustainability. This initiative looks to fill a critical gap in current education by connecting the stewardship of cultural sites to active environmental learning. By leveraging the rich histories and material examples found in archaeological parks, GreenHeritage seeks to cultivate ecological thinking through a novel educational framework. Archaeological parks serve as both guardians of historical civilizations and living case studies in sustainability. However, their educational potential often remains unrealized, with a traditional focus on conservation and tourism. GreenHeritage addresses this by transforming these sites into vibrant classrooms where the sustainable practices of the past enlighten contemporary actions, demonstrating how culture preservation and environmental consciousness are intertwined. GreenHeritage resonates with the European Green Deal’s vision for a resource-efficient and climate-neutral Europe by exploiting the full potential of these sites to recount the past, heighten present awareness, and envision a more sustainable future. It aims to knit together a network of educators, cultural heritage managers, and stakeholders from across Europe, enabling an ongoing exchange of best practices and insights to promote sustainability within cultural heritage work. Strategically aligned with the Sustainability priority of the Creative Europe Programme, the GreenHeritage project contributes innovation by promoting the integration of Europe’s rich cultural heritage into modern environmental stewardship. Through this project, the silent narratives of past civilizations will empower us to trace humanity’s journey, reflecting ancient social, economic, and environmental practices with direct implications for today’s climate challenges.
