The Institute of Archaeology, Institute of National Importance for the Republic of Serbia, welcomed to Viminacium participants of the international summer school “International Intensive Summer Course on Cultural Diplomacy, International Cooperation and East-West Relations – Business, Culture and Global Dialogue in the Balkans,” led by Prof. Dr Paolo Sabbatini, Assoc. Prof. Dr Matthia Cervoni, and Prof. Dr Ljiljana Marković.
Among the guests were programme participants Anna Avvisati, Giacomo Coloricchio, Edoardo Imbrioscia, Davide Girardi, and Lavinia Ghent, who had the opportunity during their full-day visit to discover Viminacium, its archaeological heritage, its long history of research, and contemporary approaches to the protection and presentation of cultural heritage.
The International Summer School is being held in Belgrade from 31 August to 11 September 2026 and is organised by the Faculty of Business Economics and Entrepreneurship (PEP), Belgrade, with the participation of international academic and institutional partners. The programme focuses on cultural diplomacy, international cooperation, and East-West relations, with particular attention to the Balkans as a meeting point of different cultures and civilisations. One of the programme’s key aspects is the understanding of cultural heritage as a tool for international dialogue.
The visit to Viminacium was organised by the Institute of Archaeology, while the guests were welcomed and guided through the Archaeological Park by a team from the Institute of Archaeology and Viminacium Archaeological Park, led by the Director of the Institute, Dr Mirjana Vojvoda. Following the tour of the Archaeological Park, the guests visited the Museum and Domus Scientiarum, where they had the opportunity to learn more about the results of archaeological research at Viminacium and the ways in which its rich heritage is preserved, studied, and presented to the public today.
The visit provided an opportunity not only to discover one of the most important archaeological sites in Serbia, but also to exchange knowledge and experiences and discuss the role of cultural heritage in connecting people, cultures, and institutions – themes that lie at the very heart of this international programme.
