Interests and methodology of research

Marija Jović specializes in Roman-period archaeology. Through many years of rescue and systematic excavations, she has gained extensive experience in analyzing the formation of Roman military fortifications and Late Antique necropolises in southern and southeastern Serbia, as well as in the study of Roman archaeological material, particularly ceramics and coins.

Her research focuses primarily on Late Antique Roman numismatics, monetary circulation, and iconographic analysis, with special emphasis on the monetary economy and the ideological and propagandistic concepts of Late Roman emperors. She is also actively engaged in applying modern technologies to heritage research, especially artificial intelligence in the digitalization and interpretation of cultural heritage. In this field, she participates in and leads World Bank–funded projects aimed at developing innovative tools for documentation, analysis, accessibility, and public engagement.

In addition, her work addresses the illegal trade in ancient coins, including its networks and organizational mechanisms, as well as the study of counterfeit ancient coinage, production technologies, and the negative impact of these illicit activities on the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
