Dancing Histor(y)ies Viminacium 2025: ALL INCLUSIVE – HERITAGE ON THE MOVE
This June, Viminacium transforms into a living stage as the Dancing Histor(y)ies Festival unfolds from June 1 to 8 in the Archaeological Park. With free admission, the festival invites audiences to experience contemporary dance woven into the fabric of Roman history.
Before the official opening on June 5, the festival offers a rich program of community engagement activities. These include an art exhibition in Kučevo (May 29), Roman Children’s Day filled with creative workshops, games, and dance classes (June 1), and two international conferences held at Viminacium (June 3 and 4), focusing on inclusive heritage and green sustainability. These events create a vibrant platform for dialogue between contemporary art, education, environmental responsibility, and cultural heritage.
The main performance program begins on June 5 with the Polish Dance Theatre’s I Set Off on a Journey, the Road Is Very Long—a powerful reflection on memory and loss, inspired by the site’s ancient mausoleums. 420PEOPLE continues the artistic dialogue on June 6 with ILLUMINATIO, an evocative performance presented after a participatory procession through the archaeological complex.
On June 7, the Derida Dance Center (Bulgaria) presents (In)Visible, exploring themes of social invisibility and belonging through movement and personal storytelling—set in the atmospheric Roman baths. The festival concludes on June 8 with ilDance’s No Other More Treasured, a poetic exploration of time, landscape, and cultural memory, preceded by performances from local youth dance and drama groups.
In addition to the international program, each festival evening from June 5 to 8 features a variety of performances by local stakeholders, celebrating the region’s artistic diversity. Participating groups include Dance Studio Density, Dance Group Royal, the Stevan Mokranjac Music School from Požarevac, Dance Group Bolero, Ballet School “Dimitrije Parlić” from Pančevo, Amadeus Dance Studio, and students from the Požarevac Gymnasium.
The festival is organized by the Institute of Archaeology and the Archaeological Park Viminacium, and co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, with the support of the Creative Europe Desk Serbia, the City Administration of Požarevac, Elektroprivreda Srbije – TE-KO, the Cultural Centre of Požarevac, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Belgrade, the Student Cultural Centre of Novi Sad, the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, and the company Kostolac Usluge d.o.o., Kostolac.
